5 Most Popular Questions People Ask Before Beginning Therapy

You might benefit from therapy if you’re experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm that interfere with your daily life, relationships, or work. Other signs include difficulty coping with major life changes, recurring relationship problems, substance use concerns, or simply feeling stuck and wanting personal growth. You don’t need to be in crisis to seek therapy—many people find it helpful for self-improvement, stress management, or navigating life transitions. If you’re questioning whether you need therapy, that curiosity itself is often a good indicator that it could be beneficial.

Your first session, often called an intake session, typically focuses on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. Your therapist will ask about your current concerns, mental health history, family background, and goals for treatment. This is also your opportunity to ask questions about their approach, experience, and what therapy will look like moving forward. Don’t worry about having everything figured out—first sessions are about building rapport and creating a foundation for your work together. Most people leave feeling heard and hopeful about the process ahead.

The timeline for therapy varies greatly depending on your specific concerns, goals, and personal circumstances. Some people notice improvements within a few sessions, while others may need several months or longer to achieve their goals. Generally, research shows that many people begin to feel better within 6-8 sessions, with significant improvements often occurring within 3-6 months of regular therapy. Your therapist will work with you to set realistic expectations and regularly check in about your progress. Remember that therapy is a process, and lasting change often takes time and consistent effort.

Many insurance plans do cover mental health services, though coverage varies by plan and provider. We have an office manager available to check your benefits free of charge. Please feel free to call our office if we can assist you with learning more about your mental health coverage.

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy and is protected by law. Your therapist cannot share what you discuss without your written consent, with very limited exceptions. These exceptions include situations where there’s imminent danger to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or when ordered by a court. Your therapist will explain their confidentiality policies during your first session and answer any questions you have. This protected space allows you to speak openly and honestly, which is essential for effective therapy. You have control over what you share and can build trust with your therapist at your own pace.
